There are several types of phrases in English grammar.
They are classified according to their function in the sentences in which they
are used; as,
1) A Noun Phrase:- a phrase that does the
work of a noun is called a noun phrase; as,
I.
Rama work hard to get through the examination
II.
Walking early in the morning is good for health
III.
Bread and butter is enough for me
2) An adjective phrase:- a phrase that
work of an adjective is called an adjective phrase; as,
I.
Ravindra Nath Tagore was a man of parts
II.
The boy with a red cap on his head is the
monitor of the class
III.
Those girls was very nice
3) An adverbial phrase:- a phrase that
does the work of an adverb is called an adverbial phrase; as,
I.
Poor people were in perfect trim
II.
Poor people leave from hand to mouth in these
days
III.
The dog ran very quickly
4) A verb phrase:- A phrase does not work
of a verb is called a verb phrase; as,
I.
He has turned over a new leaf in his life
II.
Players are looking forward to the District Sport
Tournament.
III.
The dog fell into a ditch
5) A prepositional phrase:- A phrase that
does the work of a preposition is called prepositional phrase; as,
I.
He was absent on account of ill health
II.
The scheme fell through for want of support
III.
The young girls was dancing in a room
6) A conjunctional phrase:- A phrase that
does the work of a conjunction is called conjunctional phrase; as,
I.
The train started as soon as I reached the
station
II.
Not only is he intelligent but also hardworking
III.
He is not only a great poet but also great
singer
IV.
He visit both Chandigarh and Delhi
